COVID-19 LOCAL FOOD RELIEF

Shoppers Needed for COVID-19 Local Food Relief

With schools closed, more children who previously got nutritious meals at school are now in need. Our friends at Church of the Redeemer in Newton have created a ministry that aims to address this need. We can help them meet their weekly goal of filling at least 150 bags with food that will then be delivered to The Epiphany School, St. Stephen’s Youth Programs, and seven Newton Public Schools for distribution to families.

The issue is procurement. They need the buying power of as many people as possible since many of the items to go in each bag are limited to shoppers in quantities of 1 or 2. But if 100 people buy 1 or 2 of these items while they shop in a store or online, the program can meet the needs every week.

Food items can be dropped off in provided containers at the parish office of Church of the Redeemer at 379 Hammond Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.

Each bag includes a balance of proteins, fruit and carbohydrates. The next time you go shopping (or order from Instacart) take along this FUEL shopping list and include some of the needed items.

FUEL shopping list

  • can of chicken (12.5 oz)
  • can of tuna (5 oz)
  • bag of beans
  • jar of peanut butter (18-24 oz)
  • cans of fruit (15 oz)
  • jar of applesauce (24 oz)
  • lb. of pasta (any type)
  • 1-2 lbs. of rice
  • box of macaroni and cheese (6 oz)
  • box of crackers (Triscuit, Wheat Thins or similar)
  • box of cereal (10-15 oz)
  • breakfast bars (granola, BelVita, etc.)
  • jar marinara sauce (24 oz)
  • can of soup or chili

Volunteers are also needed to help pack the bags at Redeemer. Please contact Wendy Wheeler if you can help pack bags, working at a safe distance.
