Celtic Spirituality

Mini-Retreats

Spring 2006

Saturdays, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.

OVERVIEW: The Celtic Christian Community at All Saints meets for worship each week Saturdays at 5:00 pm. and Wednesdays at 6:15 pm. We draw inspiration from Celtic sacred communities in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, including the holy islands of Iona and Lindesfarne. We come together to deepen spiritual understanding and practice in Saturday mini-retreats and other events. All are invited.

May 6

"Mary as an Inspiration for Celtic Spirituality" - Mary was the inspiration of Celtic saints and scholars through the centuries; we invite participants to bring a favorite picture, icon, statue, poem, song, or hymn that speaks to them of Mary's spirit. Led by Malia Crawford, M.Div., graduate of Harvard Divinity School, who has preached and taught about Mary as a model for women and men on their spiritual paths.

June 10

"St. Columba and the Spirituality of Iona" - One day after Columba's feast on June 9, AnneMarie Ellis will lead this exploration of Columba and the vibrant community on Iona that continues Columba's tradition today. AnneMarie, a leader of the Celtic Christian Community at All Saints Parish, has been on two pilgrimages to Iona and she has lectured extensively on Columba and Iona.

and looking ahead to the eighth anniversary of the Celtic Holy Eucharist at All Saints Parish ...

September 16

"Music from the Iona Community" - Led by Fiona Vidal-White, who has a Masters Degree in Sacred Music from Boston University. In this mini retreat we will explore the music that is the bedrock of our Celtic worship - music from the Iona Community. We will look at the origins of the community as composers of song, and of their inspiring force, John Bell, and ask the important question, what is new and different about Iona hymns? We will examine other forms of music that are popular in their collections, including shorter worship songs and music from around the world, and look at the theological implications of their desire to encourage all to sing together, in unison and in harmony. And of course, we will sing!

Following the Saturday mini-retreats, all are invited to the Celtic Contemporary Mass at 5:00 p.m. and a reception with the retreat leader from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
