Dear Parishioners and Friends,
In this stewardship season we reflect on the abundance of God's gifts and our participation in the work of sharing God's love with others. Our worship services this weekend will focus on our stewardship of children as we join congregations around the world in celebration of Children's Sabbath. For more information, please click on the website of the Children's Defense Fund.

Please note that the we are now using the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) reading.
In the Collect, we pray: Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
The first reading from the Book of Job presents God's answer to the questions of Job: "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements — surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? " (Job 38:1-7, (34-41))
Psalm 104 expresses the creature's response to the Creator: "Bless the LORD, O my soul; O LORD my God, how excellent is your greatness! you are clothed with majesty and splendor. You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak and spread out the heavens like a curtain. You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; you make the clouds your chariot; you ride on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers and flames of fire your servants ... O LORD, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures."
The epistle to the Hebrews recalls Christ's dignity as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek, the ancient priest who ministered to Abraham. "In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 5:1-10)
In the Gospel of Mark, James and John put this request to Jesus: "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Mark 10:35-45)
Please join us for the Holy Eucharist this Saturday at 5:00 pm and Sunday at 10:30 am.

Events at All Saints Parish
Mini-Retreat: Worship and Its Ministers. Led by The Rev. Dr. Christian F. Brocato. Saturday, October 24, 9:00 am - 12 noon (Coffee and bagels available at 9:00 am; Retreat begins at 9:30 am). What makes worship sacred and what detracts from the sacredness of worship? How can the ministers of the altar, lectors, intercessors, acolytes, choir, ushers, greeters, and altar guild foster a sacred spirit for a congregation? How can these ministers enter into the sacred spirit of worship while conscientiously fulfilling their roles? Do the responsibilities of serving at worship make it difficult for lay ministers to fully enter into worship? These and other questions will be discussed in the mini-retreat. The retreat is open to all but is especially recommended for those who serve in liturgical roles in worship.
