Welcome Back - September 12

From the Rector

WELCOME BACK

The summer has been far from quiet at All Saints as we came together for the "Explorations in Faith" course in June and July, a supper to welcome newcomers to the parish, meetings of the Stewardship, "Surround the Spirit", Facility Use, Outreach, GBIO, and Welcoming Committees, and several weddings.

In all this, we seek to do God's work, not our own. We are part of God's mission to bring about healing, forgiveness, and renewal. By our participation in worship, prayer, education, service to others, and generous financial support, we do God's work in this place. All Saints has a tremendous ministry in this community that we are called to strengthen and expand. Thank you to the pledging members of All Saints and all who support our ministry in ways large and small.

On September 12, we welcome back our choir and church school. We begin the fall with great hope and enthusiasm. Please look over the many interesting activities described in this Saints Alive! And please join us in the coming weeks.

CELEBRATING 110 YEARS

All Saints Parish was founded on All Saints Day, November 1, 1894. On Sunday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m., we will celebrate our 110th anniversary with a solemn festal Holy Eucharist, with Bishop Shaw as celebrant as preacher. We invite current and former parishioners, vestry members, and clergy to join us for this festive event. We will observe our first 110 years until All Saints Day in 2005 with several special lectures and other events, which will be part of the 300th anniversary observances of the Town of Brookline in 2005. Thank you to our 110th Anniversary Committee, Laura Vennard, Jean Stringham, Maryalice Mohr, Carol Pineiro, Rick Montross, and Susan Hagner who are assisting with various aspects of our celebration.

WELCOME JENNIFER

We welcome Jennifer Allred, seminarian at Harvard Divinity School, who will serve her field education year at All Saints this year. Jennifer will co-teach the Explorations in Faith course this fall and assist with the Beacon Street Fellowship Ministry to those in their 20s and 30s, among other duties.

MEN'S GROUP

The All Saints Men's Group is a very lively and enjoyable gathering which will resume on Saturday, October 2, 8:00-9:15 am. Bagels, juice and coffee will be served. Thank you to Peter Stringham for co-leading the group and to the outstanding group of men that participated last season. New members are welcome. This fall, we will be reading a very lively and stimulating book, American Jesus, by Stephen Prothero. Copies are available in the Guild Room.

ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH OF THE DEAF

We welcome the St. Andrew's congregation and their Vicar, the Rev. Roy Brown for their second year at All Saints. They meet on the second and fourth Sundays of the month in the Guild Room at 11:00 am for Social Hour and in the Sanctuary for worship at 12 noon.

Anne Guenzel & Stefani Schatz

Anne Guenzel and Stefani Schatz discussing
Schola and Church School programs

Church School will resume on September 12 at 10:15 am, a time that we hope will be more convenient for families and enable more children to participate. The popular Cherubs program for grades K-1, combining youth choir and religious education, will also meet at 10:15 am. Schola for grades 2 and above will meet at 9:30 am. Please see more information about Church School and Schola in this newsletter and the insert and please join us on September 12.

Life@All Saints is a new course that David Killian and Leslie Sterling will lead this fall on three Wednesdays, September 22, 29, and October 6, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. The course will provide an opportunity to meet the clergy and ask questions about All Saints and the Episcopal Church. Life@All Saints is open to anyone who wants to know more about the history, spirit, and vision of All Saints Parish. If you want to feel more connected to the life of our community, please join us. There is no admission fee. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, please contact David or Leslie at 617-738-1810.

Explorations in Faith begins Wednesday, October 13, 7:00-8:30 pm, conducted by the Reverends David Killian and Leslie Sterling and seminarians Jennifer Allred and Jon Eden. This six-week course is a stimulating and enjoyable presentation of the essential beliefs of the Christian faith, based on the book Following Jesus by Harold Percy. Copies of the book are available in the Guild Room. New members, those considering becoming Episcopalians, and all who would like to update their understanding are invited to attend. Please call Mae Jones at 617-738-1810 or office@allsaintsbrookline.org.

Women's Book Circle
A Gathering of Our Voices

Our second book circle for women at All Saints Parish. It was a good beginning in the Spring ... we welcome returning and new participants.

You are invited to join a group of women gathering to share our lives in the context of a passion for books and spirituality. We desire to read books written by, about, and for women - and reflect on how our Christian experiences are unique to us as women. Our conversations attempt to discuss the core issues in our lives as women in the Church. We share leadership/ facilitation of the group as well as our voices. Snack, juice, and coffee will be provided the first week - then we share this hospitality and cost as well.

Our second series, meets on five Saturday mornings: September 26, October 9 and 30, November 20, December 4, from 8:30 to 9:45 am.

Our book has not been selected. We will make that decision in September. Please come and be a part of this gathering! All women are welcome. Please talk to me with any questions you may have - especially with an RSVP - 617-738-1810 x13.
