Good News and OpportunitiesClick here for Church School News (see Articles) SUMMER READINGFor your summer reading we suggest: God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It, by Jim Wallis. This New York Times best-selling book asks these questions, "Since when did believing in God and having moral values make you pro-war, pro-rich, and pro-Republican? And since when did promoting and pursuing a progressive social agenda with concern for economic security, health care, and educational opportunity mean you had put faith in God aside?" Jim Wallis offers a clarion call to make both our religious communities and our government accountable to key values of the prophetic religious tradition -- that is, make them pro-justice, pro-environment, pro-equality, pro-consistent ethic of life (beyond single-issue voting), and pro-family (without making scapegoats of single mothers or gays and lesbians). Our biblical faith and traditions simply do not allow us as a nation to continue to ignore the poor and marginalized, deny racial justice or turn away from those made in the image of God. These are the values of love and justice, reconciliation, and community that Jesus taught and that are at the core of what many of us believe, Christian or not. The Women's Reading Circle and Men's Group will discuss the book separately on Saturdays, September 17 and October 1st (Women at 8:30 am, Men at 8:00 am), and then jointly on October 15 and 29 at 8:15 am. Copies of the book will be available on the bureau in the Guild Room; pick up a copy now for stimulating summer reading and join us for the discussion in the fall. For information about the Women's Circle, contact Stefani Schatz at reled@allsaintsbrookline.org; for the Men's Group, contact Peter Stringham at peter.stringham@gmail.com.

Education for Ministry (EFM) is the acclaimed program for those who want to understand our rich scriptural heritage, grow in their life of prayer, and be strengthened on their spiritual journey. It is also recommended for those who are discerning a call to lay or ordained ministry and who want a deeper spiritual grounding for their daily life. Dick Vanderlippe, Diocesan Coordinator of EFM, was at All Saints to present EFM on Sunday, June 26, when he showed a video, provided materials, and answered questions. Please consider being a part of EFM this fall. For more information contact David Killian at rectord@allsaintsbrookline.org or Stefani Schatz at reled@allsaintsbrookline.org. Message from Steven Maki I have been doing well in Newfoundland. I really am loving parish ministry. I imagine that the heart of it is similar wherever you go. The snow and ice has finally melted away... only happened three weeks ago for the most part. I have been having three services on Sundays (morning & evening prayer for now). Yesterday I had the 6th funeral since I arrived. There have been 4 baptisms, 10 children in the confirmation program, and a discussion/Bible study group. I have been trying to get into a routine while being proactive about my own wellness and time management. This opportunity will definitely provide me with a wealth of valuable experience. I am hoping to have a vacation in July and come back to MA for a time. I will definitely let you know when I do. I am now planning my ordination as priest, now only two weeks away. I was ordained in the parish at St. Barnabas Church at 6PM (NL time) on 10th of June - the eve of St. Barnabas Day. Hope you and the folks at All Saints are all well. I could not have done it without you and your support and prayers. Summer Social Hour. During summer months when services start at 10:00 am, our regular social hour hosts rest and give others the opportunity to volunteer. We keep it simple with cookies and juice as social hour fare. Cookies are in the cupboard in the Guild Room; hosts provide juice or lemonade. If you've never tried serving, this is a perfect opportunity! On the bulletin board, there is a sign up sheet for the summer Sundays. Step by step instructions are attached to the cabinet in the Guild room. Thank you for your summer service. - Barbara MacDonald Watercolor Painting Classes. Dear Friends, I want to thank you very much for the poignant and heartfelt goodbyes I have shared with you during the past couple of weeks. I was deeply honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award, and it will hang near my desk at home, to inspire me in my future work. My yak will also take up residence in my study, to remind me of the Young Adults in the Church. The delicious key lime pie is, alas, already just a memory! I hope we can keep in touch; I plan to visit the All Saints website for regular updates on all your doings, and I will certainly look forward to visiting when I am in Boston to meet with my advisor over the next couple of years. I wish you all many blessings in the months and years ahead! Affectionately, Parent/Child Playgroup. The drop-in play group meeting in the Parish Nursery/Co-op Nursery school on Mondays from 4-5 pm has become a thriving community. We have between 8 and 10 children who come with a parent/care-giver on most Mondays. Parents have been extremely thankful for something to do to get children out of the house when the weather is poor and for a community of adults to trade stories and advice with as children play. Please join us Mondays, 4-5 pm and become part of this thriving group. For more information, please contact Eileen Sweeney, sweeneei@bc.edu, 617-965-8133 or David Killian, rectord@ allsaintsbrookline.org, 617-738-1810. |
